1. Metro (Public Rail)

The Istanbul Metro network is expanding rapidly. While it’s a budget-friendly option, there is a catch: There is no direct metro line to major tourist hubs like Taksim, Sultanahmet, or Sirkeci. To reach these areas, you will need to make at least two transfers.

2. Municipal Public Buses

Public buses are available at both airports. This is the cheapest way to travel, but I do not recommend it for foreigners unless you speak Turkish. The routes are limited, schedules are infrequent, and there is often a significant language barrier.

3. Dedicated Airport Shuttles (Havaist & Havabüs)

These are comfortable, municipality-affiliated private shuttles.

• Havaist: Operates between the city and Istanbul Airport (IST).

• Havabüs: Operates between the city and Sabiha Gökçen (SAW).

• Inter-Airport Travel: Havaist is the only bus service connecting IST and SAW directly (approx. 2-hour journey).

4. Istanbul Airport Taxis

Taxis are available 24/7 at both airports. They work with a taximeter, and the fare depends on distance and traffic. Be aware that during peak hours, you might face long queues.

• Yellow Taxi: Standard cars with the lowest rates. (Note: Many do not accept credit cards; it's best to have cash.)

• Turquoise Taxi: More comfortable sedans, 15% more expensive than yellow taxis.

• VIP Taxi (Black): Luxury minivans, 70% more expensive. Ideal for large families with heavy luggage.

One of the most important things for a smooth arrival is knowing exactly where to go once you land. Unlike yellow taxis, private transfer services have designated Meeting Points at both Istanbul Airport (IST) and Sabiha Gökçen (SAW).

• Exit Gate Procedures: After you collect your luggage and pass through customs, you will head towards the arrival exit gates.

• Designated Meeting Points: Private transfer agencies are usually not allowed to wait directly at the curb. Instead, they operate from specific "Welcome Desks" or numbered columns (e.g., Column 9 or 13) just outside the exit.
